Guiding Salmon River Communities.
The Project: The focus of this project is to complete some minor work on the basketball and tennis courts, restoring the safety and
providing a positive recreational area for our youth.
The Work: It has been determined that the following items are in need of repair
or upgrading.
- New backboard structures installed at both ends
- New painted and weatherproofed backboards
- Adequate lighting with a push-button 30-minute
timer
- New lines painted on the concrete
- Removal of 3”x3” curb at the base of the north end
Collaboration: So far, the Canyon Communities Coalition has partnered with School District #243 to accomplish this project. Financial
support has also been pledged or given by the City of Riggins, Pine Tree Credit Union, Medley Electric, Idaho Power, The Rodeo Club,
and Blevins Real Estate.
Schedule: The proposed deadline for completing this project would be the end of the school year, approximately
mid-April 2010.
At this time, all that is left to do is that the new lines need to be painted on the court, which will require
warm weather. This project, although close to being finished, is on hold until spring for final touches.
Background: The basketball and tennis courts located on the elementary school property have long been a central gathering place for the youth of Riggins. Unfortunately, over the years the courts have fallen into a state of disrepair. The backboard on the north end is loose and unstable, while the backboard on the south end of the court is missing completely. The lights have been disconnected and no longer operate, leaving our children to try and play in the dark. The poles that the lights are installed upon are deteriorating and may be unstable. All of this is completely unsafe, and does not help to portray Riggins as a youth-friendly community.
